the best way to learn a foreign language was to read its poetry
Hmm, I'm less than convinced, given that I'm moderately fluent in French, yet I've been struggling mightily with parallel texts of Lamartine, Hugo, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbeaud and Mallarmé for the past few months. I'm really enjoying it, however.
But then, I'm no poet.
